The Latest Internet Security Technology for Malware Threats

by Chand on November 17, 2011

Malware is a catch all term, which refers to any program designed to infiltrate an internet address or computer and extract information without the owner’s consent. Basically, malware is software (because it’s a program) with bad (“mal”) intent. And it’s everywhere.

Internet suppliers are constantly having to overhaul their security routines in order to stay ahead of the game. I personally have had my email account hacked into on several occasions despite the fact that it is hosted by one of the largest commercial communications providers in the world: evidence of just how far Verizon internet and other providers have to go in order to stay ahead of the bad guys. Verizon, incidentally, is not the company that provides my own internet connection.

There are multiple ways for malware to get into your system and those ways are changing all the time. So how do you stay ahead of the game?

Well, to be honest the best thing you can do is to get your internet connection from a provider that can provide up to date enterprise class security, personal firewall protection – all the stuff, in other words, that you would expect to receive from the company that delivers internet to your home.

Your modem and wireless router should both have inherent firewalls, which will be doing their thing to protect you against unwarranted intrusion. Your computer also needs to be guarded with a commercial anti virus program – you can get some excellent stuff as share ware but if you want to make sure you are playing by the terms of your warranty you should probably stick to something everyone trusts, like Norton or McAfee.

Always install critical updates as they pop up – as long, of course, as you know that those updates are genuinely coming from Microsoft. If they are not then they could be malware themselves.

Pop ups and unexpected free gifts should be ignored at all costs. Never open an email from someone you do not know unless it refers specifically to something you know about – so no “a job for you”, or “just catching up” emails, please!

All of this is basic precaution – without it you will be laying yourself open to the most vicious of malware attacks, the stuff that gets into your bank account and steals your identity. The unfortunate reality, though, is that even for something like Verizon internet there will be thousands of attacks every hour, all aimed at getting past your defences to do something unauthorised to or with your computer.

Ultimately all the average user can do to stop malware is keep on top of the latest updates, keep his or her anti virus software trusted and up to date, and pray that the attack that lands a big fish from your pond never comes. At least when you have a company like Verizon internet running your connection you know that you are doubly backed up – buy the business class security at their end as well as the top of the range home class security at your own.

If you have done everything within your power to combat malware then you can do no more. At least these days the technology for stopping it is much stronger.
